Henrik Juel: The rooks have switched place. Following -1... Rb8:S -2.Sb6, bRb8 retracts further to g8, bBd8 retracts to f8 and bPe6 to e7, to allow wK to exit via e6; retract bRh8 to h6 and h7xRg6 etc. wPg4 cannot retract until orig. wRh1 is home. This is the only Volet retro with a K in check, composed in Tom's youth, before he saw the light! (2003-11-25)
Thomas Volet: The exception in this case to the otherwise observed constraint of not having a check in the diagram or stipulation as to who is on the move relates to a collegial colloquy at the time with with the composer J.G. Mauldon, who was active in this task. (2022-03-24)
A.Buchanan: Terrific composition! Often in a Type C composition, one might retract the check to give Type B. But the thematic Ta8 here could not exist without a check in diagram. There are different areas of design space are accessible depending upon level of self-imposed constraints. Some retro composers like Baibakov systematically explore Types B&C as well as Type A. I don't see this as any kind of defect.
I particularly like that the lock on h-file only allows one sT to squeeze itself out. (2022-03-24)

bPf6 comes from e7, else collision with wPf7. So can't uncapture fxg2 until wP retracted. White has 6 pawn retractions before retro-pat, just giving Bl time to put Le1 & Ta8 (impostor) back home, and uncapture exf6. So Black must retract first, and it's WTM. sD must clear out of the way, and c4 is the only possible square, wPaxSb can't happen on b5, or it would block sD. And axSb4 would block sLe1. It was axSb3. So wPb5 must retreat to b4, and thus Black cannot play R: 1. Lb4-e1. So neatly R: 1. c7-c5 is forced.

(a) sLa7 is promoted. If White castling rights remain, then bPf captured fxgxh2xg1=L, which with dxc6 makes 4 captures. White has lost Bd, Be, Bf/h & Lc. However, wBe can't have captured or promoted (h/fxg & Lf at home are the only Black casualties), so can't have contributed to Black captures. Therefore impossible, and wK did lose castling rights before. Now trivial for sBf to have promoted.
(b) sLa7 can be original, so castling is still ok. Even if sLa7 is promoted, wBe can have promoted, and again White can still castle.

Henrik Juel: The position can be reached in 18.0 moves: the first 3.0 as above, then Black plays as above, while White plays f3 and 14 tempo-moves like Sh3-g1.
Changing the stipulation to 'Proof game in exactly 18.5 moves' may rectify the situation.
The intended White play is very nice: Roundtrip by Ke1, needed by the triangulation on e3-f4-f3-e3, and roundtrip by Sg1, which screens on d4. (2011-03-14)
A.Buchanan: The preferred trick in such situations is to add an extra half move. So I'd try 19. ... Lg8: is that sound? (2017-09-14)

A.Buchanan: Thanks Mario, and I agree with you about the aesthetics of change. After posting my Lg8 suggestion, I did regret it because it's doubly suspicious. Firstly, the bishop can sneak past bRh8; secondly it takes the bishop's eye off d3 & c2. A more serious guess is to replace the last black moves by 16... Rh6 17... Sf8 18... Rf6 19... g6. This might fail for what in my head I call the "jigsaw" reason: that the known sub-chains of moves no longer mesh together in a unique way, but I don't think it fails for any other reason. Prove me wrong, stout rawbats! :D (2017-09-18)
A.Buchanan: Sorry Henrik I should also have said thank you for trying to validate my dumb earlier suggestion :-) (2017-09-18)

A.Buchanan: Thank you, Mario. Obviously the composer could easily have fixed this if he was aware of the concern. Judge's comment [Silvio Baier]: "Two cross-captures with the same type of captured pieces (QR) are combined with a cross-capture of two black rooks. This is not the highest number of cross- captures in an orthodox proof game (see e.g. P1003984 for comparison), but the pairs are very harmonious and the additional white Q-Pronkin is difficult to implement, and especially the motivation of the promotion of Pa2 is very deep. The check in the diagram position does not detract, since g2-g3+ is also possible with respect to pure retroanalysis."
A.Buchanan: Great problem, but I disagree with the last sentence in Silvio's comment. The alternative at the end g2-g3+ would force an obtrusive bishop. If the composers could have figured out how to do this without the final check, they obviously would have. (2017-09-18)
Henrik Juel: I also like this proof game very much
It seems the kind of problem that is most readily solved by hand; the missing [Lc1] and the missing black rooks might prompt the suspicious solver to consider cross-captures
Euclide did find the solution, but after a long time, and he was not able to verify uniqueness within an hour (2017-09-18)

Judge's comment [Thomas Brand]: "This elegant proof game seems me original enough compared with Hashimoto's Probleemblad 1999, 3rd Prize, (PDB P1000642), even though the theme is not doubly set. The only missing white man is a Rook captured at e6, but Ra1 could not leave home."
Henrik Juel: The white plan is obvious, and Black ensures uniqueness by putting his men to be captured on squares, where White can go anyway, and by a late king's walk
This proof game is an enjoyable solving object showing that man can beat the computer; Euclide was still trying to find a strategy (a list of moves, possibly infeasible, that leads to the diagram position), when I had solved the problem and written the present lines...

For this short PG any tester will suffice, but if you push this idea further, Natch is much faster than Jacobi (2020-10-13)
A.Buchanan: Can’t a fianchettoed bishop go round to the bank rank and do it again? So even 20 is not a barrier (2020-10-13)
A.Buchanan: Dates in PDB are yyyy-mm-dd or dd/mm/yyyy. Hence I will change publication date from Dec to Oct (2020-10-13)
James Malcom: Right-the date slipped me again!
Andrew, while a bishop can easily be fianchettoed twice+, about the number of bishops doing it, not how many times it is done. I'm sure that an expert could do 6 fianchettoing bishops. (2020-10-13)
A.Buchanan: I am joking James: this is cool already (2020-10-13)

The joke here is that pawns may promote to foreign units.
Henrik Juel: The testers probably do not work here, but this seems unique
1.b4 g5 .. 4.bxa7 gxh2 5.axb8=sS hxg1=wT 6.Txh7 Txh7 7.Th1 (2020-10-14)
A.Buchanan: According to Joost De Heer, WinChloe has a category “promotions adverses”, and under this, the problem is C+. Looking now for a full Homebase without utilising promotion to enemy pawn, which makes it too easy (2020-10-15)

As intimated by the motto, the black Gnus have switched places
TRD's classical fairy men, Grasshopper and Nightrider, are traditionally depicted by rotating a queen and a knight 180 degrees; so I would prefer the Gnus here represented by a 90 degrees rotation (either way) (2021-02-19)
A.Buchanan: Hi Henrik thanks for the "orientation on orientation" :) I have pivoted the knights. The 100 gnu problems in PDB are 30 L, 20 U & 50 R, so I've gone for the last (2021-02-19)

so it suffices to test the position with Pf3 on g5 and a wP added on f2
C++ means C+ plus that no shorter solution can be found.
A.Buchanan: The definition of Pronkin seems over-narrow, in two ways:
(1) The original officer must be captured: why? Standardization of material can be achieved by later Ceriani-Frolkin of the promoted officer, or (if S or T) by capture of another officer. In *any* of these three cases, it's an achievement for the promoted unit to have doing a homecoming.
(2) And this capture must happen *before* the homecoming of promoted officer: again why? This is a similar timing irrelevancy to "Phoenix", where the proper concept is "Nix".
So there are all these other fine scenarios which are completely nameless. Not to moan: how to fix all this? (2021-07-04)
A.Buchanan: @Henrik, I like your concept of "C++" (the well-known programming language). For positions with checks in the final diagram clearly testing n & n-1.0 suffices. Where there is no check in the final diagram, then the testing should be n, n-0.5, n-1.0 & n-1.5. Even though this is a bit of a bore, in most cases the other cases are very quick. This is the minimum set of tests necessary to *guarantee* no shorter PGs exist. To me, it seems worth pushing that extra yard, because otherwise C++ will be tarred with the same subjective incompleteness as C+. (2021-07-04)

Suggested by P0000541. If Tivadar's problem had been a double homebase, it would have been the first in the world, pipping by 8 months P0002288, Andrey Frolkin's rendering of E.C.Mortimer.
See also: https://gatherer.wizards.com/pages/card/details.aspx?name=Tivadar%20of%20Thorn
The flavour text suggests the impostor theme: "His blade came down upon the neck of a goblin — but not the one he had charged. When Tivadar looked up, the world he had known was gone."
Since the beginning in 1993, Magic the Gathering has had white and black knights as a kind of homage to chess. These creatures have evolved and Tivadar of Thorn is literally a white knight, who in chess terms we see charging out from g1. There are two main kinds of white knight: the anti-black and the anti-red, and Tivadar is the latter.
YM: Sorry - two impostors were in P1329742 (2021-10-20)
A.Buchanan: Is there a mode for viewing PDB problems where one doesn't get to see the keywords (or the solution, which also a bit of a hint)? (2021-10-20)
A.Buchanan: Yes, YM, your P1329742 is very good. And single impostor in homebase:2 is demonstrated in PG in 4.0. I wanted to post this one because I was surprised to render the problem sound just by j'adoubing one unit to its home square! There's also an interesting artistic cross-over with Magic the Gathering.
It is intentionally not specified in which direction to rotate. If you turn the position 90° clockwise (wKf4), there is no two-move solution. If you turn it 90° counterclockwise (wKc5), you get a position where Black cannot have moved last.
The pawn is decisive.

A.Buchanan: There are literally hundreds of problems in PDB where "Drehung um 90 Grad" means clockwise. So reading the text here, one thinks: "Oh the stipulation is wrong - I'll correct it." The joke is so slight against the noise that it's not worth bothering with. Better to have "which way?" in the stipulation. (2022-02-10)
A.Buchanan: Also the fourth orientation unmentioned has no solution. Somehow would be nice to make reference to that "for symmetry". Maybe publish the board with unshaded squares in a diamond orientation, and ask the solver to find the two orientations that work. (2022-02-10)

- Author – Kurt Keller (Ulm, Germany)
(The problem was obviously brought up too early for the Easter greeting. However, the problem itself is suitable for the Christmas season because the two crosses can also be considered a Christmas tree or candle.) Vergleiche (Compare) P1388082

A.Buchanan: WinChloe & YACPDB don't know this composition. (2021-10-20)
Mario Richter: No typo, the position with black Kd8 was intended, the cook was found by the 'Schwalbe'-solvers (Heft 71, Oktober 1981, p. 349) (2021-10-21)
