Set 1…Qxc4 2.Sf3; 1…Sxc4 2.Sc6; 1…Qxe4 2.c3; 1…fxe4 2.Rxd7 but nothing is set for 1…Kxe4. The strong give-and-take key forms a powerful battery. 1.Sxd7! (>2.Sb6) Qxc4 2.Qe5; 1…Sxc4 2.Rxd3; 1…Qxe4 2.Qc5; 1…fxe4 2.Se5 (switchback). This last mate also follows 1…Kxc4. There is no extraneous play and the wRd8 provides full value in both phases – a beautiful work. In his award Jeremy mentions that those few predecessors of which he was aware all suffered from certain shortcomings."
