play all play one stop play next play all
"das zeigt die Paradoxie der AP-Bedingung!" (MS). 6L./5+5P.
A.Buchanan: "By 'type Tauber/Caillaud' it is meant that the individual positions may/should be regarded as a retroanalytic overall complex (otherwise no AP legalization would be possible), although they are independent of each other due to the retroanalytic reassessment after each retraction." (2023-04-03)
Michel Caillaud: The original stipulation is #1 (durch wen?).
As wPe2 cannot be captured on its file, the 4 white captures for 4 Pawns to promote to Knights are (a2)xb3, (e2)xf3 and (f2)xg3 2 times, and wPb2 was captured on its file by (Dd8)xb6.
As b3-b2 (before (a2xb3)) and c7-c6 (before (Dd8)xb6) cannot be immediately retracted, only bK and wSs can play the last moves.
As indicated by Gerald, bK has to go to g8 to unlock the position, freeing bSg5.
When Ka3-a2 is retracted, previous white move places the 6 white Knights on black squares; the resulting Retro-Opposition implies that black is to play in the diagram position.

A.Buchanan: In both candidate solutions, counting of wPs after retraction on means it must be an original unit uncaptured on h1 so can only be wS.
The solution for b) does not work for a) because, if one retracts two promoting moves, then wPs have captured 9/10 missing Black units, while Black has 1/2 accounted for by wBc1. However wPg & bPg passed one another, which requires two more captures by a single player.
In b) the exciting retraction Qa8xh8 is blocked, however now the free pawn captures to explain g-file are shifted from 1+1 to 2+0, so bPg can pass wPg. But the vacation of d2 allows a new cook. This is fixable by shifting wPb instead of wPd. We don't need to shift it to an adjacent file: the solution is still ok if the balance is 2+1.
So "b) wPb2 to b7" fixes the cook, and it's validated by deadpos. (2024-01-15)

Henrik Juel: In Losing Chess the kings are not royal
In Kamikaze RI each capture removes one white and one black man
So the empty board is legal, and any position with one man (KDTLSP) is illegal
An Illegal Cluster is an illegal position that becomes legal when you remove any one non-king
My guess would be 2x6x64 = 768 or possibly 2x5x64 = 640
Where did I go wrong? (2020-07-12)
Henrik Juel: maybe 768 - 32 = 736
where 32 is the number of ways you can put a pawn on row 1 or 8 (2022-10-13)
A.Buchanan: In an “orthodox” illegal cluster, a pawn couldn’t be on the first or last rank unless it was the only non-king unit. There’s probably no principle to cover this rather dull corner-case KPvK. Ask HG! (2022-10-14)
A.Buchanan: And in orthodoxy, do two adjacent kings constitute an illegal cluster? There are no non-king units to remove, so the condition is vacuously satisfied (2022-10-14)
Henrik Juel: On your last comment, Andrew:
Two adjacent kings do not constitute an IC. The position is illegal, and when you remove any non-king you get the same illegal position (2022-10-14)
A.Buchanan: Define that a box is SAFE if it contains no radioactive objects. So is every empty box safe? Yes! :-) (2022-10-14)

Judge Michel Caillaud: Additional condition allows a respectable length (not far from being a record for a C+ SPG tested by Popeye!) but also makes things easy. Game flow is nice but the trick of oscillating wRa1 is known (MC, 3rd Prize, D. Innocenti-44, 2002) and Immun condition easily helps progression of the play by blocking black Pawns.

Autordetails: Ravi Shankar S.N. (IND-Bangalore)
Henrik Juel: Problems in this retro genre are called pacific retractors, I believe, so as an English keyword 'Type pacific' is more natural than 'Type pacifistic' (2014-06-17)
Alfred Pfeiffer: Autor "Ravi Shankar" (6 Probleme) = "S. N. Ravishankar" (43 Probleme)? (2018-01-17)
Henrik Juel: Probably yes, Alfred, but this is just my guess (2018-01-17)
Arnold Beine: Der Autor heißt "S. N. Ravi Shankar". N. Ravi Shankar". (2018-01-18)
Alfred Pfeiffer: Danke für die Auskunft. Damit kann es vereinheitlicht werden.
Ist "Ravi" ein Vorname oder ein Teil des Familiennamens? (2018-01-18)
Henrik Juel: Indian naming conventions are extremely confusing for us in the West, and I certainly do not understand them
The well-known chess player V. Anand is an example:
Our interpretation, that V. is an inital for his first name and Anand is his family name, is not correct at all
Rather, his name is just Anand, and if you need to distinguish between several men called Anand, you might use the 'initial' V., because the first letter in his fathers name is V (except of course that these are translitterations from Hindi or some other Indian language)
For this author I would suggest just Ravi Shankar (2018-01-18)

It is a fine demonstration of the potential of the fairy condition Disparate. In the solution, a white promotion (into piece X) occurs on square c8 before any move of [Qd8] or [Ke8]. The following move Qd7 proves that X is not a rook (it can still be a queen because of the fairy condition!). The immediately following move Ke7 proves that X is not a knight. Then Ke6 is played, followed by a move by Qd7 which proves that X is not a bishop.
X thus can only be a queen! (We still have to show that the position is legal.) Only after completion of the proof, the promoted queen is captured. It is admirable that the author managed to compose a move sequence obeying all mentioned constraints concerning the move order. A rich demonstration of the fairy condition, exciting to solve.
Henrik Juel: Definition of Disparate from Julia's Fairies:
If one side makes a move with a piece of type “x” (black, white, neutral, half-neutral, etc., King included), the other side cannot answer immediately by moving a piece of the same type “x”.). A pawn promoting is a pawn move.
To me, it is not clear from the definition that 9.c8 is undetermined, and only later is inferred to be 9.c8=Q
Why can White not decide to promote to queen? (2017-03-18)
Henrik Juel: I misunderstood your text, Vlaicu
Now I see that White indeed decides to promote to queen, and your argument shows why the other promotion choices do not work in this proof game (2017-03-18)
Henrik Juel: ... even though the promoted man never moves (2017-03-18)
paul: Jacobi checked the last 12 moves and gave unique solution.

'Quartz' (P. Raican): "The proof game is a correction of one published in Problemaz, December 2008, which was the last issue of this interesting chess magazine, edited by Abdelaziz Onkoud. The authors recently demolished the original problem with Jacobi. Lecturers are invited to solve this PG, even with the help of Labelle's program. After 10 years, the cook-hunters are now able to verify, even partially, the problems collected in this article, using the remarkable program Jacobi."
(mri: A small remark: 10 years ago it was already possible to "verify, even partially" at least some of the "Provocateur" PGs using 'rawbats').

BG: "Dieses Problem bereitete mir erhebliche Lösungsschwierigkeiten. Also könnte Weiß vielleicht 2. - Klasse Aufgabe!" HG: "Homebase mit Geschwister-Sb1 und weißem und schwarzem Ceriani-Frolkin-Turm." TZ: "Zwei Prentos-Türme und doppelte Homebase. Sxb1 erfüllt dabei zweifach. Sehr schön gemacht."

Classification after Branko Pavlovic:
1. Classical Maximummer:
Black has to make the geometrical longest move with the following restrictions:
a) Black attacks the white king according to the orthodox rules
b) If the absolutely longest moves are not executable, Black makes the relatively longest moves, i.e. one of the executable ones with maximum length.

2. Ultra-Maximummer:
As the classical Maximummer, but without a)

3. Exact-Maximummer:
Only the longest moves are "active". (2022-06-11)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Mario. I would prefer if this kind of distinction between checking, control & move was defined abstractly, independent of any particular fairy condition, to which it can then easily be applied. Also, prefixes "ultra & exact" are misleading (2023-06-29)

Henrik Juel: how do you show that Black may not castle in part a)? (2022-12-21)
Mario Richter: The argumentation goes as follows:
In a), either Black's last move was Tf8-h8, or if Black's last move was f7-f5, then this was only legal if Black has lost his right to castle, otherwise (instead of f7-f5) he had to chose the longer move 0-0.
So by retro argument, Black is not allowed to castle in a). (2022-12-21)
