Olaf Jenkner: Wieso wird Weiß pattgesetzt? (2010-03-02)
Mario Richter: Weil der Komponist das so wollte :-)
In fs33 ist die Forderung wie folgt wiedergegeben: "Wei nimmt einen Zug zurück und hilft, da Schwarz sofort pattsetzen kann." (2010-03-03)
Olaf Jenkner: Ach so, h=1 bedeutet eigentlich, daß Schwarz beginnt. (2010-03-03)
Henrik Juel: Yes, it is a bit confusing; but for retros it is an old tradition that you should not interpret one move stipulations too rigorously. (2010-03-05)
Mario Richter: But at least retro play and forward play harmonize: the side that retracted last starts the forward play. (2010-03-05)
Adrian Storisteanu: Can easily make it conform to today's accepted standards (i.e., drop the half-duplex indication):

Cook: e.p. not justified as R: 0.e3xd4 possible
VL: Unjustified ep-capture because of –e3xd4. For correction it suffices e.g. to add bSe3.
This is possibly a unique 2-move helpmate with ep-key and 2 solutions of the type 1.2.1.1 (at least so currently in the PDB).
Publi?ation details. H551 in the Helpmate section of the July issue, with no preview. Here is the text of the solution published in the Nov.-77 issue: “…White may have just played P(e3)xd4. Very few solvers have spotted this. Full marks for claim of no solution with correct reasoning but, in fairness, one mark for composer's intention. White cannot have just played K(a5)a6 in reply to Pxb6+ as too many captures by Black are required.” (2023-12-01)
A.Buchanan: Yes Valery you are right this must be cooked. However, I'm not a fan of +bSe3 because it spoils one of the model mates. Separately, I mildly prefer bPf7 to bPe6. (2023-12-03)
VL: I do prefer bPf7, as well. I don't see any way to save at least one of the properties Kindergarten Problem and Model mate (2) after fixing (what for these keywords have been added just now?). Besides, Andrew, please, refine the specification ((full) number and publication month 07-08). (2023-12-03)
A.Buchanan: Ok have added the publication details. The keywords are useful to indicate the aim, even though the problem is cooked. I guess there is a way to keep the model mates but it’s very clunky and probably +bSe3 is better (2023-12-03)

Moldenhauer: Computerprüfung: C+ Popeye 4.88 in 39 Std. 35 Min. (2022-09-16)
Mario Richter: 2 Anmerkungen:

Anton Baumann: Gemäss Alybadix gibt es 40 dualfreie Varianten.
Die weissen Züge sind immer die gleichen.
Bei Schwarz kann Kb4 als s1,s2,s3 oder s4 ausgeführt werden;

A.Buchanan: The point about promotion dual hadn't occurred to me: interesting! On reflection, I think it's like the tolerated dual in regular chess, where if the mating move is =Q/R or =Q/B that's ok, because it would be unreasonable to exclude from soundness all promotion mates where the mated king is not very near to the promoted unit. Similarly here, the promotion captures the opposing king, so the promotion choice is academic. Nevertheless, we would not wish to render unsound *all* king-capturing promotion moves, so we need a tolerated dual! Ground-breaking! :D Thanks so much (2021-05-02)
SP: Herr Buchanan: You are not claiming to have composed part (a), are you?
It has been published by several others. (2023-01-08)
A.Buchanan: The contrast between the two win conditions is the entire point. However this must be represented using the a)&b) notation, which gives the impression that each twin is separate. The composition was just a self-published schema anyway, so who cares? (2023-01-09)

Chess problem by AI program ChatGPT

Q: Can you give an example of a chess retrograde analysis problem?

A: A retrograde analysis problem in chess is a problem where the goal is to determine the sequence of moves that led to a given position. For example:

White to move and mate in 2
[FEN "8/8/1p6/1P6/3k4/8/8/K7 w - - 0 1"]

In this problem, the goal is to determine the two moves (one for white and one for black) that led to the position shown. The solution is 1. bxa3+ Kd4 2. Kb2#
Henrik Juel: I do not understand this at all
It seems that ChatGPT is worthless for retro problems (2023-01-29)
A.Buchanan: Generally ChatGPT is amazing. We have entered a new age. Interacting with it reminds me of the first time I sent emails, or used a browser: we have crossed a frontier into engage with a function that will soon be commonplace. I already use it as a work tool for the last week. However it has limited skills and I was surprised it even attempted to construct a chess problem. It’s failure is humorous and kind of dreamlike (2023-01-30)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for your clarification, Andrew
ChatGPT is so amazing that it will give you a grade of B on some university exams; using it is obviously cheating, but do you enforce it?
In my youth calculators were developing fast; initially I banned the use of calculators in my OR exam, but the students were unhappy about it, saying that they were allowed in high school; I was forced to allow calculators, but then the poor students pointed out that the rich students had an unfair advantage; I then bought a few hundred cheap calculators and let the students borrow one for the exam (the rich students were still mad, but had to accept their lot in the social-democratic society of Danmark) (2023-01-30)

Add White K & P, Black K & P for an illegal cluster
a) R: 1. f3xSg2+,f3x~g2=+ dann 1. f3xg2+ Kg1= patt
play all play one stop play next play all
Since last move was forced (whatever officer was captured on g2), and current position is dead, the current position is illegal under Dead Position rule & convention
Henrik Juel: adding wKh1, wPg3 and bKh3, bPf3 seems to work... (2023-04-13)
Mario Richter: Henrik, can you please explain why the position you suggested is an IC? (2023-04-14)
A.Buchanan: See I wonder if a problem like this should get the keyword "Illegal position" too, to indicate that the diagram position (before the pieces get added) is not the result of typing issues. (2023-04-14)
Henrik Juel: I was probably wrong, Mario
No need to add 'Illegal position', Andrew; lots of IC problems have an illegal initial diagram (2023-04-14)
A.Buchanan: You were right, Henrik! :)
And for "Add pieces" problems which are not IC, should we have "Illegal position" too? The point, as it would be for joke problems, is to inform that the diagram position does not contain a typo. It's like "[sic]" in prose-writing. (2023-04-15)
Henrik Juel: If my solution works, the problem should be labelled cooked
I guess there is no harm with 'Illegal position', if it helps the solver (2023-04-15)
A.Buchanan: Sorry I wasn't reading carefully enough, Henrik. Your suggested cluster is not illegal (2023-04-15)
