A.C. White: "He [Loyd] cared little for the means he used, so long as his results were successful. And, strangely enough, it almost seems as though his results were increasingly successful and all the more artistic when he took the most radical liberties with the conventional theories of composition. ... It is certainly not considered good form to reply to a check by Black with a direct capture. To do so is recognised as crude, obvious and unscientific. But Loyd's genius thought little of theory, giving all its attention to practice. And his results justified his independence. These problems are among his very best. The key of No. 581 is one of the most puzzling in all two-move composition, subtle, artistic and scientific in the highest measure; and the mates blend with it most beautifully."

'Sam Loyd and his chess Problems': "The interception of the line of action of the Black pieces by White leads to some pretty effects, but in general they are less striking than the effects produced by a similar interception by Black. The reason for this doubtless is that when the Blacks interfere with their own pieces they do so against their will, because the enemy has in some way or other lured or forced them into a trap. On the other hand when it is White who interferes with Black, it is usually a case of direct attack combined with malice aforethought. It may be cleverly devised and it may be well hidden, but a theme which depends for its effect mainly on the moves of White's attack can never have the charm or the unexpectedness of one which is developed through the defensive efforts of Black. Take No. 436 It is clear that removing the White Rook threatens 2 Qb1 mate. Black's obvious replies would be 1. ... B x P or 1. ... P x Q. This readily suggests 1. Rc6 to be the key, because in no other way could White give the two necessary diagonal mates (2. QxP mate and 2. PxB=Q mate) which the Black Queen and Rooks are all in position to defeat. A cut-off key of this sort is better disguised in a three-move problem, as the Black defenses that have to be prevented are less easily seen."

athulin: Actually, this is from the Cleveland Leader tourney, which closed (i.e. with last date for contributions) in Sept. 1876 for US participants. (Report was printed in Cleveland Sunday Morning Voice on 1877-11-18?) It was published under the motto "Just for Fun" as enigma "Tourney Problem 17" in Cleveland Leader on 1876-12-07? [? after dates because cutting book only has hand-written dates, and so risks inaccuracies].
The reference to the Centennial Tourney is incorrect, probably a misinterpretation of the current source reference. (2022-01-04)
Mario Richter: @anders: The reference to the Centennial Tourney comes from 'The Golden Argosy', p. 217:
"Both problems Nos. 291 [Shinkman's P1057647] and 291A [this problem, i.e Loyd's P1030677] were entered in the same tourney, in which Loyd's set won the second prize. ... No. 291A. S. Loyd. second Prize, Centennial ty., 1876-77" (2022-01-04)
SP: I can verify publication date of 7/xii/1876. Cleveland library has
cutting that includes printed date.
The source of the attribution error appears to be the Golden Argosy,
as Mario says. This is repeated by other sources such as Howard. (2023-06-01)

'Sam Loyd and his Chess Problems' ist sich bei der Quelle nicht sicher und gibt an: "Elizabeth Herald, c. 1890?", 'Der Schachzug' gibt an: "'Chess Magazine', 1878". Die 'Philadelphia Times' schreibt: "The following problem by Mr. Samuel Loyd, originally published in the New York 'Evening Telegram' and reprinted in the 'International' ..."
'New York Evening Telegram' (Leiter der Schachrubrik "Castles and Kings": Sam Loyd):
Composers not infrequently get the idea of the trick for a problem by first placing the black king on the board alone and adding the other pieces one at a time as the problem becomes developed during the course of construction. Sometimes the relative positions of the kings will suggest a good theme to build upon. During a recent visit to the New York Chess Club our chess editor was invited to compose an impromptu position for the members to solve, and the placing of the two kings in opposite corners of the board - as shown on the diagram - was given as a theme to work upon. The position of the pieces illustrates the group of solvers in one corner, and the author in another awaiting the arrival of the solution, which, by the way, he will add, wass not so spontaneous as the composing. It is a crude affair, but is thought to give evidence of latent genius which may yet come to the surface. While referring to the placing of the kings, we give our readers another little puzzle in the same line [s. P1364636], which they will find both amusing and instructive ..."

Laut 'Sam Loyd and his ...' "First Prize, Am. Chess and Prob. Association", Set: "A Fair Field and No Favour"
A.C. White: "The key is wonderful. The Queen is withdrawn to a position of apparently small power for the purpose of commanding squares whose importance is not recognised until the full four-move solution is seen. The White Queen is of small use at f8 until the Queen's Knight is manoeuvred to c3. This requires two more moves, so that the mates are revealed suddenly and with an element of surprise."
Loyd: "The Queen moves from a strong position to one that threatens nothing but the leading idea, which would not be hit upon by chance. The pieces are in active play; the mating positions have all to be created, and the variations are in harmony with the theme".
PR Elson, Neill und Reichhelm: "It is a colossal four-mover, and stands out grandly as the best single problem of the tournament, having a wonderfully deep design together with a most finished rendering."

A.C. White: "His unsound 3-er, No. 622, is very important historically, in that it was the first attempt ever made to combine three promotion variations from a single Black Pawn. Last year, J. Möller quite independently arrived at a similar version, entirely sound and very beautiful [P1246525]. The only difference was that he placed the Rook at c1, the Queen at d4, and a Knight at f4 instead of the Bishop. His solution is 1. Qd3, involving the same principles as Loyd's did. I mention this to show how near Loyd's genius led him to the ultimate rendering which another discovered fifty-four years later. But Loyd was, for once, too impetuous: " That problem should be killed. It is not in 'Strategy', nor in my collection. I revised it in that little corner problem which gives all the good there is in it [s. P1059071]" (L. 1909). This must remain one of the instances where I disagree with Loyd. His monogram, No. 623 [P1059071], is ingenious enough, but it lacks the complete task feature which made No. 622 a remarkable conception for a youth of seventeen to chance on."

Loyd in "The Musical World": "We give, this week, two positions taken from actual play, so as to show how necessary problem study is to make the finished chess player; for it is acknowledged by all chess writers, that the study of problems is indispensale to a player before he can learn how to play the termination of his games correctly. ... Problem IX is the termination of a game recently played at the rooms of the Hudson County Chess Club. We are sorry that we cannot give the moves of the game, as it was very pretty. The termination, however, is well worthy of an examination, as it takes very good play to win."
SBD: Cooked, of course in that 2. Sd4 works as well, as well as the dual mate 8. Da4/b3#, although I am certain Loyd would not see these as defects based on the idea he was trying to show. (2012-02-23)
athulin: In Chess Strategy, p. 246 (but not in White?) Loyd expands on the original story:
"... the committee who were pitted against me
abandoned the game as drawn, which I willingly
accepted, telling them, at the same time, that they
had a forced mate in eight moves. After being informed
of the fact they were unable to discover it." (He also modifies the name of
the club to Hudson City Chess Club.) (2022-08-21)
athulin: ... and in Chess Strategy Loyd also states that he was playing the game blindfolded ... (2022-08-21)

Problem 1169 (the present problem) appeared on 1881-11-13.
No column appeared on 1881-06-19; the one that appeared
the day before (-18) did not have any problems by Loyd.
The problem is reprinted in White's Loyd book as prb. 308,
and is there dated 19th November, 1881. Again there is
error: no column appeared that date. (2022-09-13)

Gradually they began to take the shape of Emanuel Lasker's initials, and finally a neat two-mover came into existence. It was noticed tha Mr. Loyd was suspiciously hovering around that table.
