A.Buchanan: In both candidate solutions, counting of wPs after retraction on means it must be an original unit uncaptured on h1 so can only be wS.
The solution for b) does not work for a) because, if one retracts two promoting moves, then wPs have captured 9/10 missing Black units, while Black has 1/2 accounted for by wBc1. However wPg & bPg passed one another, which requires two more captures by a single player.
In b) the exciting retraction Qa8xh8 is blocked, however now the free pawn captures to explain g-file are shifted from 1+1 to 2+0, so bPg can pass wPg. But the vacation of d2 allows a new cook. This is fixable by shifting wPb instead of wPd. We don't need to shift it to an adjacent file: the solution is still ok if the balance is 2+1.
So "b) wPb2 to b7" fixes the cook, and it's validated by deadpos. (2024-01-15)

Siegfried Hornecker: No matter how the position is changed, there can be no line where the king, coming from b6, is not allowed to return to b6 when the queen checks on e5. Also, there would be no reason to not play again 2.h2-h1~ as a waiting move.
The retroanalytics say that the last move must(!) have been 1.a7-a8S+ h2-h1L so I think the correct stipulation is:
a) Last move (w+s)
b) h#2
I have no source for this but if you think about it, the whole thing makes sense! The last move was 1.a8=S+ after 1.h1=L and from the diagram position the h#2 runs 2. Kxc5 h8=D 3. a1=T De5#. That's what I think. (2006-12-12)
Jan Hein Verduin: I got the Jaarboek too, and mr. Hornecker is right. The stipulation there is "h#2; what where the last w+b moves?" The way the solution then is given (the retro moves are given first) probably caused the confusion. (2007-01-26)

Henrik Juel: You must be right, AV, because with wSh8 the retroplay might be the bland -1.f7xDe8=D Kf6 etc. without unpromotion on h8. (2005-06-13)
Michel Caillaud: Indeed the diagram is wrong : there should be a white Bishop on h8
AUW spread over retro play (-1.fxDe8=D+ Kf6-e7 -2.gxLh8=L+ ...-n.cxTb8=T) and forward play 1.fxSg8=S#

t/promotion only,
Erich Bartel: Im Dreisteiner 4 Umwandlungen in promotion-only-form.
Joost de Heer: An AUW is promotion to all regular pieces. In Cavalier Majeur, a nightrider is the regular piece, not the knight, so a knight promotion would actually be a fairy promotion.
So in my opinion this is an AUW, just like e.g. promotions to LE, PA, VA and MA in LeoChess is an AUW. (2021-05-27)
A.Buchanan: Yes clearly we must be able to scale the notion of AUW to the fairy world, and Cavalier Majeur is an established format, even in Popeye, avoiding any excuse that one is simply picking the fairy units one by one like widgets. Not sure why Erich is so grudging. (2021-05-27)
Henrik Juel: There is no real disagreement, I think
Erich says that this is not an orthodox all-promotion
Joost and Andrew say that it is a fairy all-promotion (2021-05-27)
Joost de Heer: @Henrik: I'm saying this is NOT a fairy AUW, so exactly the opposite.
AUW: Promotion to all pieces that are present in the begin position (and for Cavalier Majeur that's QRBN, and not QRBS).
Fairy AUW: Promotion to all pieces that are present in the begin position, plus all extra fairy pieces that are allowed.
In a CM composition, promotion to QRBS is not an AUW (since in CM the knight is a fairy piece!), nor is it a fairy AUW (the nightrider promotion is missing). (2023-03-23)

[Edgar Holladay]: The hundreth anniversary of Alain White's birth is March 3 of this year. As a memorial tribute, P.L.Rothenberg ("Chess Review" Problem Editor in the early 1940s) and I present No.84, a previously unpublished revision of one of White's problems (s. P1177158). The sprightly (if unorthodox) key, the general construction (including the useful pinned condition of the pieces on d6 and b5), and the problems's main theme (four distinct promotions of the f2 pawn) are all Alain White's. The present revision removes the diluting effects of an extraneous defense and an unwelcome dual mate in one of the main variations, the result being that the problem's only four mates are now given by a promoted black pawn, a feature perhaps not previously shown in a rendition of this task in a two-move selfmate.

Vaclav Kotesovec: This problem was a good test of the new version of Gustav 4.2c by Olaf Jenkner. A year ago with version 4.2a it was not possible to test it. Now my computer with 384 GB of RAM solved this problem in 357 hours. A great result at the limit of the possibilities of current computers and software. (2023-03-10)

paul: WinChloe gives the author's solution (only) in 9hours30min (on my PC). (2022-10-10)
