Typ Tauber/Caillaud
1. Kd4 2. bxc3ep (zuletzt nur K,T-Zug oder c2-c4) 3. e5! (nicht 4. Tb4? weil zuletzt K,T-Zug und 0-0-0 nicht mehr möglich) 4. Tb4 (zuletzt e7xLd8=S möglich) 5. Tc4 & 1. 0-0-0# nicht 1. Td1#? wegen fehlender AP-Legalisierung
"das zeigt die Paradoxie der AP-Bedingung!" (MS). 6L./5+5P.
A.Buchanan: "By 'type Tauber/Caillaud' it is meant that the individual positions may/should be regarded as a retroanalytic overall complex (otherwise no AP legalization would be possible), although they are independent of each other due to the retroanalytic reassessment after each retraction." Gerald Ettl: 1.h8D# (2023-04-03)
Michel Caillaud: The original stipulation is #1 (durch wen?).
As wPe2 cannot be captured on its file, the 4 white captures for 4 Pawns to promote to Knights are (a2)xb3, (e2)xf3 and (f2)xg3 2 times, and wPb2 was captured on its file by (Dd8)xb6.
As b3-b2 (before (a2xb3)) and c7-c6 (before (Dd8)xb6) cannot be immediately retracted, only bK and wSs can play the last moves.
As indicated by Gerald, bK has to go to g8 to unlock the position, freeing bSg5.
When Ka3-a2 is retracted, previous white move places the 6 white Knights on black squares; the resulting Retro-Opposition implies that black is to play in the diagram position.

Adrian Storisteanu: Is the star "*" in the stipulation supposed to indicate a kind of "set play" in the retro part -- in effect a "-1s dann h=1"? Because there is one:
- 1.Ke2xQf3 & 1.Ke2-e1 Qf3-d3=. (2015-08-02)
A.Buchanan: That's a clever interpretation Adrian, I am sure you are right, and it's sound according to Deadpos (2024-01-13)
Adrian Storisteanu: A more precise stipulation would be something like: (-w -s)*, dann h=1 (2024-01-14)
A.Buchanan: Good idea. The convention is that * promises at least one set play instance. (2024-01-15)

A harbinger of Dead Reckoning-style reasoning, before that rule ever existed. As sound today in 2018, as when it was composed under "insufficient material for mate" rule.
Henrik Juel: Nice to see that I am not the only freak who mixes english text with german notation (to avoid the ambiguous B)
Were you inspired by this problem in your work on Dead Reckoning, Andrew? (2020-05-04)
A.Buchanan: Ha no: when I stumbled across DP rule I knew even less about chess problems than I know now, if you can imagine, and had never encountered this one which Werner Keym unearthed and published it in "Out Of the Box". Ecclesiastes 1:9 says "There is nothing new under the sun." Mario made this point about origin of Schnoebelen promotions too. Gollon's intepretation of Chaturanga (the earliest known forebear of chess) offers fascinating possibilities for Schnoebelen promotion, which I am sure the Indian retrograde analysts of 7th Century CE were adept at exploiting, in tablets alas now lost. See https://www.chessvariants.com/historic.dir/chaturanga.html.
The "insufficient material" composition does perhaps explain Plaksin's openness to the concept of DP, at a time when perhaps some noses elsewhere were being turned up, as he later composed with Kornilov *27* other DP problems, all to be found in PDB. (2020-05-04)
Ladislav Packa: Interesting, but on YouTube I saw a game (one of the actors was Magnus Carlsson), which ended in a position with only two kings and one of the players still made a move. (2020-05-05)
A.Buchanan: http://wismuth.com/chess/illegal-moves.html contains many other games where GMs were unable to tear themselves away from playing the dead game. I think it's kind of sweet that the GMs just can't stop playing. Have you got a link to the Carlsen game please, Ladislav? (2020-05-06)
Ladislav Packa: I'm sorry, Andrew, but I don't remember. I've seen hundreds of games on youtube. But I encountered similar cases in my own practice, mostly a joke, and the game immediately ended with a smile and a handshake. (2020-05-06)
A.Buchanan: A completely different stipulation: -w, h=1 half-duplex (2024-01-11)

A.Buchanan: In both candidate solutions, counting of wPs after retraction on means it must be an original unit uncaptured on h1 so can only be wS.
The solution for b) does not work for a) because, if one retracts two promoting moves, then wPs have captured 9/10 missing Black units, while Black has 1/2 accounted for by wBc1. However wPg & bPg passed one another, which requires two more captures by a single player.
In b) the exciting retraction Qa8xh8 is blocked, however now the free pawn captures to explain g-file are shifted from 1+1 to 2+0, so bPg can pass wPg. But the vacation of d2 allows a new cook. This is fixable by shifting wPb instead of wPd. We don't need to shift it to an adjacent file: the solution is still ok if the balance is 2+1.
So "b) wPb2 to b7" fixes the cook, and it's validated by deadpos. (2024-01-15)

Alfred Pfeiffer: Was ist "Iceberg"? Ist das eine Art Augsburger Schach? (2010-09-29)
Alfred Pfeiffer: "Iceberg" ist Peter Fayers' Version des Augsburger Schachs, bei folgenden drei Unterschiede gelten (Quelle: "http://www.bcvs.ukf.net/augsb.htm"):
E1: Pieces may combine, but not kings, and NOT PAWNS either (not even when moving to promote).
E2: The game-array queen is not separable, and Qs are distinct from (R+B)s.
E3: A pawn may promote to any combination seen in the diagram, or generated during play. (2010-10-11)
A.Buchanan: Link is now at https://www.mayhematics.com/s/augsb.htm. Piece images to make up the diagrams have been lost, but you can get a clue what the diagrams were by clicking in the html. (2019-02-04)

Thorsten Zirkwitz: The stipulation to this problem is not complete: Mate in 6 and Reflected Circe! (Circé inversé, seitenverkehrtes Circe): the captured piece is reborn on its "mirrored" game-array square, for example the bishop on b2 - when captured would be reborn on f1 rather than c1, as in normal Circe.

(J.-M. Loustau, Heft 151, 2/1995). T:f6 scheitert an 2.g:f6! Deshalb muß zuvor der wBg5 abgeräumt werden: 1.Sc5 EQa3 2.Sd3 EQg3 3.Se5 EQc7 4.Sc4 EQc1 5.Se3 EQ:g5 (weg ist er!) 6.Sd5 EQa5 7.Sc3 EQe1 8.Se4 EQe7 und nun 9.Sf6 T:f6=. 8zügiger S-Rundlauf im 3$ times$3-Quadrat und großer Stern der sEQ.
Jean-Marc Loustau: To be mentionned also the set play:
1... EQe1 2.Sc3 EQa5 3.Sd5 EQ:g5 4.Se3 EQc1 5.Sf5 Ra3 6.Sg3 R:g3=

(HHS) a) 1.S:e4[+wBe2] e3 2.Kd3 De2#, 1.Sc4 Dh5 2.Se3 Dd5#, 1.f5 D:d2[+sSb8] 2.K:e4[+wBe2] Dd4#, b) 1.f5 Dd2 2.S:d4[+wBd2] D:d4[+sSb8]#, 1.Lg5 D:e2[+sSg8] 2.Kf4 D:f3[+sTa8]#, 1.Tf4 D:a6[+sDd8] 2.Dd5 Dd3#. ,E. nicht viel her.
(PGr) 17L/5P
