Henrik Juel: To preserve black castling, we must retract b7-b6, sLa7 to f8, and e7xf6, etc.
If the white castling is also to be preserved, wK must be shielded from check from sLa5
But White runs out of preserving retractions, e.g.
-1... b7 -2.e2xSf3 Sd2 -3.a3 Lb6 -4.a2 La5, and -5.g3 ruins the white castling by preventing wTf7 from reaching h1 without moving wK
-1... Kd8 easily allows white castling, so the castlings are mutually exclusive (2019-11-24)
Henrik Juel: 1.000 thr. 2.Dxg7,T~xd7,Txg7,Te1+
Not 1.Td1? 000! (2019-11-24)
A.Buchanan: How about R: 1. ... b7-b6 2. e2xSf3 Sd2-e3+ 3. a3-a4 Lb6-a7 4. a2-a3 La5-b6 5. h3xLg4 b6xBc5 6. c4-c5 a7xSb6 7. Sa4-b6 Lb4-a5 8. S~ Lf8-b4 9. S~ e7xLf6, and I think from there I can retract all the way to game array, without losing castling rights for either side? sTh8 captured at home. Other Wh pawn captures dxc, exf, gxhxg. The forward play although it has a unique key move, is incredibly messy and dualistic. The fact that this problem has been so widely circulated makes me wonder if the diagram is correct. But Winchloe has the same diagram, although assigned to a magazine called Cas. (2019-11-24)
Mario Richter: R: 1. ... b7-b6 excludes sLc8 from the list of pawn-capturable black pieces, so 5. h3xLg4?? is illegal! (2019-11-24)
Henrik Juel: h3xYg4? would suffice to make Andrew right (where Y need not be L), but hxg requires too many captures by white pawns: dxc, exf, and gxhxg (4), because [Lc8,Th8] were not captured by pawns (2019-11-24)

No. 700 HN
Henrik Juel: The intention was
-1.a2-a4 thr. -2.e2xd3
Now we can analyze the captures:
White captured [Lc8,Lf8] with officers, d2xPe3, e2xPd3, h2xSg3
Black captured the five missing white men with pawns to get [Pa7,c7] to d3,e3
So Black must add Pd3 and immediately uncapture with it to avoid white retrostalemate; White adds a queen that can retract and then mate on b8 or h8 (White has wisely chosen not to add anything after Black's first move)
-1.a2-a4 Dc7:0! -2.e2:Pd3 c4:Dd3 -3.Dh7:0, 1.Dxh8#
-1.a2-a4 Th7:0! -2.e2:Pd3 c4:Dd3 -3.Dd6:0, 1.Dxb8#
But [Th1] could not have been captured by a pawn, so the problem seems cooked (2019-2-6)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: The observation that, after retraction of wPe2xd3, a wR uncaptured by a bP is locked out of h1, limits the number of uncaptures by bPs to 4. This, however, is possible if one of the missing bPs is unpromoted on d1 and the other uncaptured on d3. Therefore there is no cook. Note that if White starts with -1.wPe2xd3? then Black can specify a bQ rather than bP as the captured piece and later unpromote on a1. Possible retroplay: -1.wPe2xQd3? Ph7-h6 (prevents entry for wQ) -2.Pa3-a4 (not Pa2-a4 which prevents the required unpromotion on a1) Qd5xQd3 (blocks access of uncaptured wQ to d6) -3,Q??-d3 but there is no way to retract the wQ to a mating position.
I think greater accuracy and variety can be achieved by:
4k3/p2ppp1p/2b5/b4p2/P7/2nPP1Pr/1PP2PPn/5BKN
In the threat -2.wPe2xPd3 the unique mate after -2...bPc4xQd3 -3.Qd4-d3 is 1.Qd4-h8# while -2...bPg6xQf5 allows -3.wQe5/f6-f5. Black can defend against the mate with -1...bPf6-f5 which, after -2.Pe2xPd3 Pc4xQd3 (not Pg7xQf6 since unpromoting bBa5 requires 4 more bP uncaptures while, excluding [wRh1], there are only 3 missing White pieces) -3.Qg6-e3, leads to 1.Qg6-g8# or -1...bKd8-e8 which, after -2.Pe2xPd3 Pc4xQd3 -3.Qd6-d3, leads to 1.Qd6-b8# (2019-11-27)
Mario Richter: What happens, if Black answers R: 1. a2-a4 with 1. ... Sg4-h2? (2019-11-27)
Henrik Juel: As Yoav points out, after -1.a2 Sg4:0! does not defend against the threat, and -2.e2:Pd3 c4:Dd3 leads to the dual 1.Dd6xb8,Dh7xTh8#
In words, White chooses to add nothing on h2, and later a queen on d3, while Black is forced to add a pawn on d3; the other remaining black pawn promoted on d1 (it was not captured on e3, as I erroneously wrote earlier, because [wTh1] was captured by a black officer)
In his second move back, Black is forced to move his added pawn back to c4 (forcing White to add on d3), because anything else would leave White retro-stalemated (2019-11-27)
Mario Richter: I overlooked that after R: 1. a2-a4 Sg4-h2 2. e2xd3 ... 3. h2xg3 is illegal, because it would put the wK into an illegal cage ... (2019-11-28)
Henrik Juel: Here is a detailed analysis, this time correct (I hope). First some general remarks
The classical defensive retractors (with forward stipulation #1) are usually described this way: The two camps alternately retract (legally of course, with White beginning) until White can mate with a forward move, after a white retraction (Black is allowed to mate also, after a black retraction; this happens in tries only)
In type Proca the retractor determines the entire retraction, in type Høeg the opponent determines the uncaptured man (if any); so Proca is natural and easy, while Høeg is weird in that the retractor does not retract in the usual sense, but just moves one of his men back, after which the opponent decides which man to add on the abandoned square, if any; only then is the entire retraction completed
Example position: wKe1, wPa6, sKe8
In Proca some of the possible white retractions are Ke2-e1, Ke2xDe1, Ke2xTe1 (not Ke2xPe1), a5-a6, b5xDa6, b5xPa6, b5xPa5ep (requiring Black to retract a7-a5 next)
In Høeg the seven legal white back-moves are Ke1 to d1,d2,e2,f2,f1 (each followed by black addition of sDTLSe1, or no addition), Pa6 to a5 (followed by no addition), and Pa6 to b5 (followed by addition of sDTLSPa6, or sPa5 (ep!))
Niels Høeg called his 1923 invention Retromate (Zeno Proca was a few months later in 1924) and used notation like 1.Kd1-e1 [D] (the move back followed by the addition in brackets); he concluded the solution with the word Retromate, and omitted the actual mating move. He considered the problem to be derived from his Retromate game, which starts with an empty board; White adds his king, Black adds his king, then standard Høeg 'retractions' until a camp can mate
Now PDB calls it Defensive retractor, Type Hoeg (or Proca), and specifies the forward stipulation (which need not be #1). The notation is identical for both types, namely the entire retraction; this works fine for Proca, but needs additional comments for Høeg (2019-11-28)
Henrik Juel: Now the comments to Fox's fine problem
After -1.a2-a4 White threatens to move wPd3 back to e2
Following the threat we see that White captured [sLc8,sLf8] with officers and the three remaining missing black men by d2xe3, e2xd3, and h2xg3
Black captured [wTh1] on g1,h1 with a knight and (as White did not capture pawns on files a-c) the remaining four missing white men by the pawn captures axbxcxd and cxd, promoting once or twice on d1
Based on this analysis it would seem that Black may add an officer on d3, which is bad news for White, e.g., -2.e2xTd3?? Td1-d3, 1... Txf1# and the wrong side is mated
But fortunately it is illegal for Black to add an officer on d3, because then Black cannot prevent white retro-stalemate, as e.g. -2... Th4xDh3 is illegal because all black captures were pawn captures (except for Sx[wTh1] early in the game), and -2... Sg4-h2 does not permit -3.h2xg3?? entombing wKg1
So Black is forced to add a pawn on d3 and then to move it back to c4, so the added white man can move back
Now White sees two mates by adding a queen, -2.e2xPd3 c4xD!d3 and -3.Dh7-d3, 1.Dxh8 or -3.Dd6-d3, 1.Dxb8#
All this is part of the threat, so after -1.a2-a4 Black can move back so as to tempt White to add prematurely; but White just chooses to add nothing and moves wPd3 back e2 etc. (If Black is really dumb and moves Db8 back to c8 or Th8 back to g8, White adds a queen and mates faster after -2.d2-d3 or -2.e2-e3)
After -1.a2-a4 Black can prevent one of the two white mates, but not both (2019-11-28)
Henrik Juel: Correction on the order in the Høeg retro game: Black starts, not White
On an empty board Black adds his king, then White adds his king, then Black moves back and White may add, then White moves back and Black may add, etc., until the retractor can mate with a forward move (2019-11-29)

A.Buchanan: Did Fabel really publish both this *and* P0007092? The question is relevant as to whether P1201955 is partially or totally anticipated. Question for Hans maybe. Thanks. (2015-10-25)
A.Buchanan: This question didn't surface before, because this position was classified as "Illegal Position" & "Grundstellung" rather than "Illegal Cluster" & "Homebase". I have merged the two synonymous keywords "Grundstellung" and "Homebase" into a single keyword such that German & English speakers can continue to enjoy their own terminology. (2015-10-25)
Frank Müller: Der Terminus Grundstellung ist im Deutschen fast nicht verbreitet. Ich bevorzuge auch als Deutscher Homebase. (2015-10-25)
Alfred Pfeiffer: Im Original von Karl Fabel lautete die Forderung: "Construct an illegal cluster with K, Q, KB, QB, PPPPPP of each colour. (It is certain this has scores of solutions, but any and every one will be interesting)" Seine Lösung war die oben angegebene. (2015-10-26)
A.Buchanan: OK, so P1201955 is totally anticipated. It was only intended as a throwaway anyway. I have replaced "Grundstellung" by "Homebase" in the German slot of this keyword. (2015-10-26)
Mario Richter: I do not agree with Andrew that P1201955 is totally anticipated. In Andrew's problem a homebase position is explicitely required, in Fabel's IC not.
This has the consequence that Fabel's problem is cooked, eg. by replacing black pawn f7 in the author's solution by black pawn f6! (2019-11-26)
A.Buchanan: Hi Mario, well I'm not going to tussle over ownership of this homebase illegal cluster. The bPf6 position you found here is also very nice. Doesn't the stipulation say that there are many solutions though, hence Fabel isn't cooked? (2019-11-27)
Mario Richter: For me it is cooked. If we accept the addition to the stipulation in this case, why shouldn't a Composer of a, say, s#27, add it too?
Compare also to the treatment of P1369443 ...

Some solvers gave 2bqkb2/p6p/p6p/p6p/P6P/P6P/P6P/2BQKB2 and 2bqkb2/8/P4P1P/P4P1P/p4p1p/p4p1p/8/2BQKB2 - are this really ICs?

I like the following solution by "WHRe" [vermutlich W.H. Reilly]: 2K5/1p1pp1p1/pk6/1P1P3p/1P1P4/6P1/1B1P3b/1BqQ3b (2019-11-27)

Anton Baumann: ursprüngliche Version vergl yac ID 193794
Nebenstehendes Diagramm ist die Verbesserung des Autors in der SSZ Mai 1978 (S.173).
Diese Korrektur ist nicht ausreichend: NL 1.Te4+ Kf8 2.Tb4 Ta8 3.Tf4+ … usw. wie oben
2. … g6 3.Tf4+ Kg7 4.Tf7+ Kg8 5.Lf6 g5+ 6.Kh3 g1=S+ 7.Kg2 nebst 8.Tg7+
Es existiert eine Verbesserung (vermutlich von DK, Quelle unbekannt) mit +sBh3, +sTh2.
Nur +wBh3 würde auch genügen, aber scheinbar hat der Autor die Version ohne wB vorgezogen.
