19308 (Fadil Abdurahmanovic & Mirko Degenkolbe). I. 1.T:c8+! d:c8S!! 2.De6 Db5# (MM), II. 1.D:e8+! d:e8D!! 2.Ld6 Sb6#. Strategisch sehr reichhaltig. Gehört auch in den Preisbericht. Prima.“ (KHS)

Henrik Juel: Euclide 1.01 ran for more than an hour, producing nothing
But the first 17.5 moves were tested correct in 8 minutes (2018-11-09)
Henrik Juel: Good proof game, considering its age
The black bishops go Lc8-h3-d7-e8 and Lf8-c5-d6 with interferences (including a swithcback by Td8) after their first moves to let Kf8 through (2018-11-09)
François Labelle: The last move must be Th8xg8, so Henrik's test in 17.5 moves plus three similar tests with white S, L, T at g8 (returning no solutions) should be considered an HC+ proof of correctness. (2018-11-10)
Henrik Juel: Good point, Francois
What does HC+ stand for? (2018-11-10)
Henrik Juel: ... never mind
It must mean correct by Computer testing with some (correct) Human reasoning added
If so, HC+ is the label we can use with many other retros, where human reasoning rules out a castling, etc. (2018-11-10)
Michel Caillaud: Full Computer testing (C+) is possible with Natch 3.2 and some time (86 hours) (2020-03-02)

Cook: Retro logic doesn’t work
(As well as major dual)
So unsound
SCHRECKE: Konnte zuletzt nicht auch 0. ... Kg7-h6 geschehen sein? (2021-02-15)
A.Buchanan: I think the diagram must be wrong. Not only does the retro logic fail, but also there is a dual 2. Df3+,Dg4+. It's not in WinChloe. (2021-02-15)
Mario Richter: An additional white Pawn e7 would justify the epkey, but not prevent the mentioned dual. (2021-02-16)
VL: We might shift wPf2 to f3 against the dual. Or exchange Bf6 with Pf2 and add wP on f3 (instead of e7)... (2021-02-16)
A.Buchanan: Shifting wBf2 to f3 leads to short cook solutions 1.Dh2. However I think 8/5p1p/4NB1k/3PPKpP/4P3/8/5PP1/2Q5 fixes the retro issue, and it's C+ by Popeye, with still ideal mate! The composer Tomislav Petrovic is still alive but would be very old (90). Is he still active? (2021-02-17)
A.Buchanan: By the way, if you query for k='foo', that will always return uses of the keyword "foobar". It's just checking for the prefix. If you omit k='foo', then that will also block "foobar". Therefore if we tag with "en passant as key", then we should not tag with "en passant" too. Both keywords should exist, and over time we may refine uses of "en passant" to be more precise.
Because of the sensible way prefixes are handled in PDB, this is a different situation from tagging a problem as both "ceriani-frolkin" and "prentos", which we should do.
On this general subject, when counting instances within a single problem, we should always use Gerd's excellent mechanism of parameters "foo:1" etc, rather than having separate keywords "foo 1", "foo 2" etc. Otherwise the set of keywords becomes unmanageable. (2021-02-17)

Habe ich da wirklich was übersehen? (2013-04-23)
Vorschlag an Olaf: Du hast ja 1.Sg2+ Kf3 2.Sxe1+ Kf4 3.Sxd3+ Kf3 4.Lxe2+ Kg2 5.Txb2 schon widerlegt.

Nochmals danke! (2019-11-10)
James Malcom: The task is surely not kaputt. Entering the FEN into Stockfish analysis yields the solution very quickly: https://lichess.org/analysis/6n1/p2r2P1/3N3p/1P1KR2n/3p1k1N/3r2pP/1p2p3/1R1Bb3_w_-_-_0_1 (2021-04-18)

h4g2 f4f3 g2e1 f3f4 e1d3 f4f3 d1e2 f3g2 e2f1 g2g1 e5e2 an. Droht f1g2 g1h2 b1h1#. Schwarz hat 6 Möglichkeiten:
a) h5f4 d3f4 g8e7 d5e4. Das gibt #10. Oder h5f4 d3f4 g8f6 d5e6. Das gibt #12.
b) h5f6 d5d4. Das gibt #11.
c) d7d6 d5d6. #9.
d) g8e7 d5e4 h5f6 e4f3. #10.
e) g8f6 d5d4 d7d6 d4c4. #11.

f3f2 wurde für Schwarz vorgeschlagen statt f3f4. Dann geht's:
h4g2 f4f3 g2e1 f3f2 e5e2 f2f1 e1d3. Z.B. h5f6 d5d4 d7d6 d4c4 d6e6 e2b2. #10. (2024-02-11)

A.Buchanan: Without getting into the distant retro history, I am guessing that the intended solution is R: 1. h2-h1=S+ a7-d8=L 2. Kc8-d8, then 1. h1=T a8=D#, so it's an allumwandlung. (2021-06-28)
A.Buchanan: If we retract the last three single moves in this way, the position is legal. White Volet pawn captures f2xPe3xdxcxbxa7, while bPh was waylaid. Black captures were bxa,axb,dxc2,gxh2. bPf promoted to B. Can we release this position? There are no tempo issues, the White officers float free, then e.g. d2-d3 unlocks everything.
Is the solution unique? If wBa8 is original, or promoted further to the right, this saves captures of black officers, which allows wPab to cross-capture instead of bPab. This means bQ or bB might uncapture wQ or wR, however I don't see any h#1 forward from that. An engine supporting simple retractions, without regard to global legality, could allow an HC+ solution as exceptions can be checked by hand. I hand the baton to Mario Richter at this point, for further validation :) (2021-06-28)
Mario Richter: rawbats finds many solutions, the most trivial one supports your observation that claiming that wLa8 is an original Bishop, gives White new opportunities:
R: 1. ... Bh2-h1=S 2. Lc6-a8 Le8xBd7, dann 1. h1=T dxe8=D# (2021-06-28)
A.Buchanan: Thanks, Mario. WinChloe has Jean-Claude Gandy as co-author, who I will add. However it is listed in WinChloe as "analytic retractor" rather than "help-retractor". What is the distinction, and does it affect soundness? (2021-06-30)
Henrik Juel: I think there is no real distinction, Andrew
This problem is a help retractor, because White and Black help each other in the retroplay (as opposed to a defensive retractor, where they fight), not because of the forward stipulation
For some people this may be confusing, and the term 'analytic retractor' might 'help' those few, although any problem with retroplay necessarily involves som retro analysis
Analytic retractor can also be used as opposed to the Mrs. Baird type retractor, which involves little analysis (2021-06-30)
A.Buchanan: Thanks for the helpful clarification, Henrik (2021-06-30)

Adrian Storisteanu: Is the star "*" in the stipulation supposed to indicate a kind of "set play" in the retro part -- in effect a "-1s dann h=1"? Because there is one:
- 1.Ke2xQf3 & 1.Ke2-e1 Qf3-d3=. (2015-08-02)
A.Buchanan: That's a clever interpretation Adrian, I am sure you are right, and it's sound according to Deadpos (2024-01-13)
Adrian Storisteanu: A more precise stipulation would be something like: (-w -s)*, dann h=1 (2024-01-14)
A.Buchanan: Good idea. The convention is that * promises at least one set play instance. (2024-01-15)

Motto: "Die Schlacht"

aus der Lösungsbesprechung (Arbejder-Skak 11/1955, S. 414): "Fine strategy involving the placings of the battery S arise from the shut-offs of white T by 3 Black men on the 'd' file, and from 1. ...Tf3, while the Key L leads itself to several close tries such as 1.
