What were the captures?
original in P1347070
Henrik Juel: Possible retroplay
-1.Tc8xSb8 Sc6 -2.d7xTc8=T Tb8 -3.d6 Sd4 -4.d5 Sf3 -5.d4 Sg1 -6.d3 Sf3xTg1 -7.Th1 Sd7 -8.Tg1 Sc5 -9.Kd7 Sa6 -10.Th1 Tf8 -11.La5 f7 -12.Sf6 etc. (Kd7 exits via h6)
The other captures were c2xDd3 and d7xSe6 (2018-2-24)
Mario Richter: Position correct? As given, there are alternative solutions, e.g. R: 1. Tc8xTb8+ Lf5-h3 2. d7xSc8 Sb6-c8 3. d6-d7 Sd7-f8! 4. d5-d6 Lf8-g7 5. Dg7-h7 etc. (2018-2-24)
A.Buchanan: I haven't tried to solve it - just noticed Ld8 was wrong. If I have Forsyth notation I usually just drop it into a spreadsheet which converts it to PDB pieces format. I am reasonably sure this program is accurate. (2018-2-24)

UdSSR-Meisterschaften.

Henrik Juel: Solutions
a) None
If Ke1 never moved, then it is now White to move, as the parities of the number of white and black moves are both even; but Black has no last move, so Ke1 did move
b) Short
[Ta1] was captured on b1
c) Long
Th1 triangulated
d) Both
Dd1 triangulated

Cyclical Zilahi with complete cycle of functions of three white units (capture, mate, support of the mating piece). Diagonal - orthogonal echo in black sequences of moves, with cyclical dual avoidance in B1. To self-block in B2 one of the squares d5, e6, d6, black could choice between two of three different moves in B1, but only one is successful, in cyclical form. (Author)

Henrik Juel: Tom modestly said 'that is really a solver’s problem -- no theoretical issues of interest to a composer.'
And sure enough: I enjoyed solving it very much (2018-2-26)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: The time and effort required to unravel this mystery is well rewarded. Before the search for a retraction sequence note that WPs captured the 2 missing Black pieces so [BPh7] accounts for one of these, capturing a White piece which, together with 3 captures by BPs on the left, completes the captures by Black. This means [WBc1] was not captured at home. Its release by WPe2xf3 occured with WP standing on g4, WB standing on h3 and WR standing on g3 (if WP was standing on g3 then either WR would be locked out of g3 or WB locked out of h3). Therefore WBh3 was promoted on a8. This implies that [BPa7] had already captured (to clear the way for [WPa2] to promote) so [WBc1], after it is released, is captured on the c-file followed by the promotion of [WPd2] on d8.

A retraction running all the way back to the start position so it can be viewed backwards as a proof game.

The solution implements several familiar themes such as Retro-shield, Phoenix, Excelsior, Swithchback. For most composers this would make us proud but for first-rate artists such as Tom it is considered no more than a "solver's problem"!
Solving this problem re-inforces my contention that Classical RA would be a great challenge for Artificial Intelligence. (2018-3-2)
Mario Richter: @Yoav: small typo: the two occurrences of "[WBc1]" should read "[WBf1]" instead. (2018-3-2)
Thomas Volet: I am concerned that with all good intention my overly kind colleagues may have inadvertently given incorrect impression that this composer thinks of a "solver" problem as less of an accomplishment than the alternative. On the contrary!
I do entertain a rough dichotomy between "composer" and "solver" compositions. But it is the former that suffer in a comparison. In his 1948 invitation to composers to realize the uncapture of a promoted unit that has not moved, Ceriani observes that "the theme is not very fruitful". Similarly, the results in the task I recently presented involving uncapture of a Pawn on a file unoccupied in the diagram and unoccupied at the time of the uncapture by anything but the uncapturing unit seemed to me devoid of much content beyond the task itself. And we may all have seen quite enough of retroscreen tasks!
A "solver" problem is one in which, as Yoav put it so well, "The time and effort required to unravel [the] mystery is well rewarded.". That seems to me the most fundamental objective for a composer. (2018-3-9)
A.Buchanan: I will have a go at solving this one myself. May I suggest that comprehensive solutions are placed in comments by themselves, rather than being surrounded by interesting text? That way when the solution is copied to the Solution field, we can hide the comment. Thanks from a janitor :-) (2018-3-9)
Henrik Juel: As janitors go, you are one of the better ones, Andrew
And you make a good point here, although it seems slightly ridiculous to divide very short comments into two, e.g.,
