Also: 1. bxc6ep Txf7 2. Dxh5 0-0# (erzwungen!). Kxd4? Tf8(b5,f5) 3. c7 4. c8=D#, weil der ep-Schlag nicht legalisiert wird, sondern 2. Dxd4! 0-0!! 3. cxb7 Ta8 4. bxa8=D# - also 4# nicht 4=).

Mu-Tsun Tsai: With some case analysis, it can be shown that at the moment when Black is about to push the second pawn one square forward, it must have already lost the castling right. So the solution is 1...Rf8 2.Ng7#, not the illegal 1...O-O? 2.Nh6#. (2012-7-18)

Henrik Juel: Apparently last move could have been Ta6xTa8 or Th6xTh8, so one of the castlings is ruined. In each case many keys seem possible, followed by D-mate on g6 or c6. What is the intention? (2004-9-9)
gw: 1. Kd2/d3/d4? 0-0-0+!; 1. Db1? 0-0-0!; 1. Kf2/f3/f4? 0-0+!; 1. Dh1? 0-0!; 1. Dc2/b7? 1. Td8!; 1. Dg2/h7 Td8!; 1. Ke2! 0-0-0/0-0 2. Dc6#/Dg6#. For me the problems seems sound: one of the castlings is ruined, but Black chooses a different retro variant according to the first white move. (2004-9-10)
Henrik Juel: Thanks. In problems with the RV condition White is entitled to benefit from the knowledge of which history is in effect. So I think RV should be deleted from the Keywords. Then the problem is 'plain' one, where each castling is a legitimate defense, because it cannot be ruled out. (2004-9-13)
gw: I am not yet convinced that it is not a RV problem. If White plays Dh1, Black chooses a history when he plays 0-0 instead of 0-0-0. In a 'plain' problem Black should play 0-0-0 after Dh1 because 0-0-0 cannot be ruled out. (2004-9-14)
Henrik Juel: I agree. But it is not a regular pRA problem (like the Langstaff 1922 classic), where the history is partitioned before the solution starts, with a separate solution for each part. In this problem it seems that only Black knows the past, and White needs to choose a key move that copes with whatever history Black chooses to invoke. So besides RV type Öffner, RV after Keym, and possibly others, we may also have RV à la Petrovic! (2004-9-14)
VL: N.Petrovic was a firm opponent of pRA, and there is _no_
necessity to try to interpret his problem via pRA (moreover,
the solution is single with no partial sub-solutions). On the
contrary, it apparently belongs to the retro-synthesis genre
(= retro-strategy = subordination = PF), according to which
the side on move may castle whenever there is an appropriate
proof game that preserves the right to castle. In maximummers,
this logic combined with the incompatibility of both B's castlings
paradoxically extends defending possibilities of B making
1...0-0! legal simultaneously with 1...0-0-0. This justifies
convincingly all the tries with castlings. The tries with Td8
need some additional explanations. Why is 1...Td8 legal after
1.Dc2/b7? There is a proof game in which 0-0-0 is legal and,
thus, 0-0 is illegal. Dc2/b7 prevents from 0-0-0; therefore,
1...Td8 remains the longest legal move! Likewise, 1...Td8 is
the longest move after 1.Dg2/h7 w.r.t. the proof games that
preserve 0-0 (and, thus, ruin 0-0-0). An original contribution!

English (slightly different from the French text!):
As explained once by Jean Bertin in "Histoires extraordinaires sur 64 cases", the pawn e5 is necessary to have a legal retroplay.

The last moves are Ra8-e8+ Ke7xe8.

Without the pawn e5, Kxe8 is illegal because Black have at their disposal Kd6 and Kf6!

Another piece of virtuosity by TRD! (2010-12-24)
Kevin Begley: Bertin's comment overlooks the possibility of relocating the bK e8 to e5 -- which bigfoots this extraneous unit, preserves retro-legality (-1.Ke6xQ/Re5 etc), and maintains the theme (Asymmetry). A curious oversight, for TRD. (2011-5-16)
Kevin Begley: last move can also be -1.K~xQe5 (from d4/d6/f4/f6). (2011-5-16)

Danke, bernd!

Henrik Juel: The given proof game seems OK, albeit with several typos
The main critical positions are:
after 74.Da1
k6s/1s1ppppp/1p1p2l1/pS1LPt1t/1P3L1P/1PPT4/3P1PP1/D3K2T (15+14)

after 127.Ld5
1Dsk3s/3ppppp/1p4l1/3LTt1t/1P3ptP/1PP2PS1/3P2P1/4K2T (13+14)
Now the black king can move to g8, after he has been helping out on the board, and we see the need for three black rooks as [Th1] is unavailable
after 151.Dc8
2D1s1k1/3ppppp/1p5s/3LTtt1/1P3PtP/1PP3p1/3P2P1/4K2T (12+13)

Henrik Juel: Solution? (2004-9-16)
Falk: The official solution is: R: g6-g7, V: 1. g7. (2004-9-17)
Henrik Juel: Yes, with wP on g6 last move could not be Sg3xDh5 (nor a5-a4, b5xa4), so Black's last move was made with K or T, and he may not castle. (2004-9-20)

White Pawns made all captures, so the unique last move was f7-f5 (g7-g5? will shut the path of dark square B to f8 and b7-b5? will shut the path of light square Bishop to c8). So 1.exf6 e.p.! c5(d5, e5) 2.f7 d5(e5, c5) 3.f8=Q(R)#

(I'm just guessing from the given solution). Last black move was not Le5-b8, because Le5-a1 would be longer; not Ld6-b8, because wK would be in check from sL; not d6xc5, because Tg8xg6 would be longer. (2004-9-13)

Mu-Tsun Tsai: Is there any other condition missing here? (circe, perhaps?)
Otherwise it appears that this position is very far from being legal as maximummer... Or is there an incredibly subtle solution? (2012-7-18)
Henrik Juel: No missing condition, I think, just careful use of white checks. In my proof game sketch Black castled and played g7xSh6; in a position with bKa6, bSb8, and bSc6, Black plays Tf8-h8; later, with bK back on g7, he plays h7xTg6.
If my sketch works, last move was Sh3xSg1.
You may want to construct a detailed proof game, Mu-Tsun (2012-7-18)
Mu-Tsun Tsai: I see... Yes you're right, it really can be done. (2012-7-18)

Vorgänger
Henrik Juel: I believe that 'White to move' should be added
This problem may very well have been made before, but an earlier appearance is nowhere to be found in the PDB (yet) (2018-2-18)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: Did Andrew, along with Henrik, miss the "Dead Reckoning" intention? (2018-2-18)
A.Buchanan: Never seen this problem before. 20 years before the dead position rule.

But I think there would still have been draw by insufficient material, which would have had the same effect here. The game ends before the knight capture.

Checkmate and pat of Black in Längstzüger are the same as in orthodox chess. Same if Black has just 1 legal orthodox move. It's only if Black has a choice that there is a difference.

So White doesn't have the move, and must have just captured something. But what? It must have been a rook, because the queen cannot checkmate as it will always have a longer move. But even then it seems hard for KvKR to co-operate for White to be mated.

In the middle of the board, can wK move next to bK in Längstzüger? That might allow wK to push bK around the board. So bK ends up on c2. This forces bR to h1. Now bK pushes wK to e.g. c3, and then moves to a3. bR can now mate on a1. Need to check the details of this, but it seems doable.

This is amazingly rich, and all based on draw by insufficient material rule. Was this the intention do you think? Certainly the stipulation seems to be correct. (2018-2-19)
A.Buchanan: Argh no, this doesn't work. Black K+R/Q can't checkmate wK under Längstzüger. wK can always wander somewhere so that bR has a longer move.
And the draw by insufficient material rule what was it when the problem was composed? The 1977 rules in Retro Corner have no such rule, either for FIDE or USCF. The 1993 FIDE rules say: "10.4 The game is drawn when one of the following endings arises: (a) king against king; (b) king against king with only bishop or knight; (c) king and bishop against king and bishop, with both bishops on diagonals of the same colour. This immediately ends the game."
Sorry for all the accidental line feeds in the last reply. (2018-2-19)
A.Buchanan: OK, it seems from the Glossary that black checkmate under Maximummer is normal. Not sure about check though, which we need if wK is going to "shoo" bK around the board. There is also an "Exacte Längstzüger" discussed in the German glossary here, which defeats my rudimentary German skills. (2018-2-19)
A.Buchanan: It boggles me that the 1977 Laws listed in Retro Corner (which are some kind of amalgam of FIDE & USCF rules) have no mention of Draw by Insufficient Material. Surely this would have been around before? A British chess instruction book in 1958 gives "too weak an army" as one of 5 ways that a game could be drawn, listing KBvK, KNvK & KvK as cases.
