Palamede, Febr. 1845

Loyds Kommentar in der "Musical World": "This problem, of world-wide celebrity, is often spoken of as the finest position extant, and is held up to composers as a model of beauty and of difficulty. It is quite common for editors, when they give a very difficult stratagem, to say "it will almost compare with the Indian problem." This is a false impression, and should be done away with, for it is far from being difficult, and, as at first appeared, showed but little skill in its construction. The theme has since been decidedly improved upon by more recent composers, who have worked out the same idea. But it has also become the most hackneyed and worn-out of all problem tricks. The Indian Problem should therefore be esteemed more on account of its being the germ from which a numerous class of problems have sprung.
It is curious that the authorship of this celebrated problem does not seem to be known: it was sent to Staunton by the Rev. Mr. Loveday, several years ago. Whether this gentleman was the composer or not, does not appear from the letter. The communication was signed "Shagird," the Hindustani word for scholar. Misled oy this circumstance, it hat several times been published as the production of a celebrated Indian player by the name of Shagird. It first appeared in the "Chess Players' Chronicle" for February, 1845 (P1043041), but was known in India for some time previous."
