The promotion square is used as a transit square for both the original rook and the promoted rook. This effect is achieved by a Bristol line clearance along the 8th rank. (2011-02-20)
paul: C+ (Euclide 0.93, after ~8 h) (2011-05-14)
A.Buchanan: Is this really Bristol, or is it double Umnov? 10.Tc8xa8 11.Tc1-c8+ 12.Tc8xf8 14.Ta8-c8 are the key moves in this regard. (2017-09-10)
A.Buchanan: OK I was thinking of how the 2 white rooks interact, which is double Umnov. But I see bi-coloured Bristol: 10.Tc8xa8 Dd8-b8, and there's also 12.Rc8xf8 & later 13. Rf8-g8 Qb8xg8 - I don't know what to call that animal. (2017-09-10)
A.Buchanan: OK it appears that 13. ... Qxg8 is double Bristol after White's 12th & 13th moves. (2017-09-10)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: The move 10...Qd8-b8 is a bi-color Turton as the BQ crosses c8 to allow the path of WRc1 to f8. It is also an anti-Bristol temporarily blocking the return of WRa8 to c8 thus determining order of Black moves 13 and 14. (2017-09-10)
A.Buchanan: Yes dual avoidance seems the basic motivation for anti-Bristol, e.g. P1291300. Only 10 anti-Bristol examples recorded in the entire database!
And 12.Qxg8 13.Rc8 is the fourth bi-coloured Bristol!
There must be a way to push this a little further so that wRc1 is back in a1 to tick Pronkin box as well. (2017-09-11)
A.Buchanan: Oh yes my other thought was that by symmetry, there must be some anti-Turton theme conceivable, in which the two pieces are going in the *same* direction. (2017-09-11)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: For an example of Anti-Turton see P1050639. (2018-04-25)

Mark Thornton: This problem was published as ("after Tibor Orban"), a reference to problem #P0000811. Note that 7.0-0 was added to achieve soundness: the position after Black's 6th move can be reached by 7 different move orders, but 6 of them involve a move by the wK or the wRh1. (2012-07-21)
A.Buchanan: It seems harsh for old Tibor Orban to take any credit for this one, in my opinion. (2014-05-08)

This problem was the centrepiece of a short article, called "A Tall Tale". It went like this:

Tweedledum and Tweedledee were playing chess. Their first 7 moves followed a line of the Caro-Kann Defence:

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Sc3 dxe4 4. Sxe4 Sf6 5. Sxf6+ exf6 6. Bc4 Qe7+ 7. Qe2

After playing 7. Qe2, Tweedledum announced Helpmate in 2.

“That’s very clever” said Tweedledee, playing 7....Sd7, “but I can match you. I have also created a Helpmate in 2, but one where White moves first and Black gives mate.”

“Hmmm, that’s nice, “replied Tweedledum, “but you haven’t quite matched my achievement. My Helpmate had 2 solutions, but yours only has one.”

“Look closer, dear brother,” countered Tweedledee, “and you will see that my Helpmate has a twin. If you remove your Pawn from c2, then a new solution emerges.”

“Well bless my soul! This is most remarkable.” said Tweedledum. “We must write this up and send it to the Mad Hatter, for publication in the Teapot Times.

So they did.

Euclide finds the solution immediately, then spends 7 minutes to verify uniqueness
Dd8 cleans out on row 1 and returns, while [Dd1] gets on the other side of [Th1]; returns by the light-colored bishops (2017-09-15)
Henrik Juel: ... Note that Lc8 must waste a move to allow white king to exit (2017-09-15)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: This is an adaptation of my joint composition with Mark for use in my article in "The Problemist" featuring cross of critical square by a single move showing Form/Anti-Form. The thematic move is 10...BQb1-f1 which crosses c1 for WRa1, a Bristol effect and crosses d1 for WRg1, an Anti-Bristol effect. The thematic effects determine the order of the last 2 WR moves. Yoav Ben-Zvi: There is also a round-trip by WQ and a Switchback by WB which in FPG terminology produces RT(Qq), SWB(Bb). Each of the queens also plays an Anti-critical move that determines move order (Anti-critical effect causes 13.Qh1-d1 to come before 14.Bh3-f1 and the Anti-Bristol effect of 10...Qb1-f1 causes 11.Ra1-b1 to come before 12.Rg1-c1) so there is also AC(Qq). The first move of WB (2.Bf1-h3) is a Bristol clearance for WK and the first move of BB (2...Bc8-b7) is a Tempo loss. (2018-03-03)
